The Little Potli of Love

It was the first day of school after the summer holidays.
Seven-year-old Aarav stood at the doorway, his new school bag on his shoulders and a slight frown on his face.
“Maa, everyone brings chips and chocolates. Why do you always pack something different?” he asked.
His mother smiled as she tied his shoelaces.
“Because I don’t just pack food,” she said gently. “I pack my blessings.”
Aarav looked puzzled.
She opened a small cotton pouch from the kitchen shelf. Inside were handmade laddus made with pure ghee, roasted nuts, seeds, dates, and jaggery.
“Do you know why I call this your Poshan Potli?” she asked.
He shook his head.
“Every ingredient has a purpose. Almonds help you think. Pumpkin seeds give you strength. Sesame seeds make your bones stronger. Pure ghee gives you lasting energy. Dates and jaggery bring natural sweetness without taking away your health.”
She handed him one laddu.
“This isn’t just a snack. It’s my way of saying, ‘Take care of yourself, even when I’m not with you.'”
At school, Aarav sat quietly while his friends opened packets of crisps and chocolates.
Curious, one friend asked, “What are you eating?”
“My mother’s Poshan Potli,” Aarav replied proudly.
His friends tasted a piece.
“It’s delicious!”
The next day, Aarav’s lunchbox wasn’t the only one carrying homemade goodness. One friend’s grandmother made dry fruit laddus. Another brought roasted makhana. Soon, the class had started a “Healthy Friday” tradition where everyone shared homemade nutritious snacks.
Months later, the school principal announced that the initiative had inspired healthier eating habits across several classes.
When Aarav came home that evening, he hugged his mother tightly.
“Maa,” he said, “your little potli reached the whole school.”
She smiled.
“That’s how love works, beta. One small act of care can nourish many hearts.”
Life Lesson
Real nourishment is more than calories—it is care, tradition, and mindful choices shared with love.
