The Night Before the Exam

The clock showed 11:45 p.m.

Books were scattered across the table. Formulae filled sticky notes. Highlighters, pens and empty water bottles lay everywhere.

Sixteen-year-old Nisha rubbed her tired eyes.

“I can’t study anymore, Maa. I’m exhausted.”

Her mother quietly walked into the room without saying a word.

A few minutes later, she returned with a glass of warm milk and two homemade laddus.

“Take a break,” she smiled.

Nisha looked at them and frowned.

“Maa, I don’t need sweets right now.”

Her mother laughed softly.

“These aren’t ordinary sweets. They’re made with almonds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, flaxseeds, dates, and pure ghee. Your brain has worked hard all day. It deserves wholesome nourishment.”

Reluctantly, Nisha took a bite.

The warm flavours reminded her of childhood winters, when her grandmother would prepare laddus for the whole family.

After a few minutes, she felt refreshed.

They sat together in silence.

Then her mother said, “Marks matter, but your health matters more. No examination is worth sacrificing your well-being.”

Those words stayed with Nisha.

The next morning, instead of skipping breakfast as many of her classmates did, she carried a small pouch with two laddus.

During the break, one of her friends looked pale and anxious.

“I didn’t have time to eat,” he admitted.

Without hesitation, Nisha offered him one of the laddus.

He smiled gratefully.

Weeks later, when the results were announced, Nisha had done well.

But what she remembered most wasn’t the marks.

It was the lesson her mother had taught her—that success isn’t built on stress alone. It is built on preparation, balance, rest, and nourishing the body as much as the mind.

Years later, as a young doctor speaking to students before their board exams, Nisha ended every session with the same advice:

“Don’t just feed your ambitions. Feed yourself too.”

Life Lesson

A healthy mind needs a healthy body. True success comes from balancing hard work with proper nourishment, rest, and self-care.
